The Korean Society for Translation and Interpreting (KSTI), founded in 1998, is Korea’s first academic association dedicated to translation and interpreting studies. At the time of its establishment, professional conference interpreters played a central role in forming the Society, which was launched under the name Korean Society of Conference Interpreting (KSCI).

One of the Society’s founding aims was to promote the study of interpreting in multilingual international conference settings as an academic field of inquiry and to provide a scholarly forum for research on conference interpreting as well as other forms of interpreting and translation.

Since its inception, the Society has contributed to the development of translation and interpreting research in Korea. Over time, the field has evolved from being regarded largely as a subdiscipline of linguistics or literary studies into an independent academic discipline known as Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS).

In December 2009, the Society adopted its current Korean name to reflect its identity as an academic association encompassing both interpreting and translation. In May 2026, its English name was likewise changed to the Korean Society for Translation and Interpreting (KSTI).

Since its founding, the Society has published Interpretation and Translation, an academic journal accredited by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). In 2003, it also co-founded the international journal FORUM, currently indexed in Scopus, in collaboration with ESIT (École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs) at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. The Society continues to promote scholarly exchange and disseminate research in translation and interpreting in Korea and beyond.
